On a frigid Friday night, the Pilot women faced off against the University of San Diego Toreros to decide who was the superior team in the West Coast Conference. The Pilots were able to shut down the Toreros with a 2-0 victory, once again winning the WCC Championship, but victory didn't come without a price.
The women's basketball team recently kicked off their season Nov. 4 against Concordia University, and with the help of a new player, were able to snag a 63-53 victory. Even though the Pilot squad played in a relatively quiet Chiles Center, many fans at the event cheered during the whole game as the women battled against Concordia.
"Practice makes perfect" is an often used saying in sports. The women's basketball team and their coaches have taken this old adage to the next level by adding a whole other dimension: the addition of an all-male practice squad whose sole purpose is to compete against the women's team during daily practices.
Cross country season is coming to a close, but Pilot runners show no break in their stride. Instead, they are breaking records. Both the men's and women's teams competed at the WCC Championships Oct. 31 in Belmont, Calif. The women finished third at the meet, while the men took home their 31st consecutive conference title.
The Pilots, though retaining home field advantage for what could be their first two games of the playoffs, have every right to be disappointed by their no. 2 seed. Seeding for the playoffs is decided by a select committee of individuals, headed by Paul Bradshaw of Baylor, who dole out the seeds based on their perceptions of the teams overall performance.
